Commitment and Discipline

Lessons to learn from Ganesha

Commitment ,Discipline and Dedication

As legend has it, Mahabharata is Ved Vyas’ creation but it is said to be written by Lord Ganesha himself. Ved Vyas approached Ganesha so that he could transcribe the epic story as he narrated it to him. The condition was that Vyas had to narrate it without break and Ganesha would write it in a single go.

As they progressed in writing the story, there came a point where the quill that Ganesha was using to write it down broke and he had no other quills with him at that moment. Ved Vyas could not stop narrating the story since the condition was already set in stone for him. Without wasting any time, Ganesha quickly broke off one of his own tusks and fashioned it into a pen, using it to continue writing the epic without interruption. This allowed the epic to become a holy one and Ganesha and Vyas ended up completing it together.

Lessons to learn

This story of Ganesha shows very clearly how necessary it is to be disciplined and determined to complete a task once you have accepted to complete it, no matter what happens.

How many times we as entrepreneurs or professionals stay committed and disciplined on a path?
Have there been times that hiccups interrupted your work but you chose to still stay there - hang in and never give up?
May be you faced unforseen difficulties and thought everything was over?
Or you did not create as much revenue as expected?
May be your personal life needed more attention or a family member was sick. May be a client canceled an order or your technical difficulties made you not perform. Or you just didn’t put yourself and your work first.
Or simply your resources got depleted unexpectedly.

I always say - Motivation gets you started but Discipline gets you going.
Whether it is your work life or personal life - discipline and commitment especially in the event of adversity will take you places

Some tips from me to make Discipline and Commitment a part of your life

Steps to get rolling woth commitmentand discipline

1. Grab a paper pen and write down all the things on your mind. You may use sticky notes too . I put them on my laptop
2. Now create time slots. Keep a stopwatch /timer for actions
3. Take action - do it. You may be procrastinating it for weeks and months. Do it . The first step will be difficult but then think of all the joy you ll get when you do it
4. Track your time when you break your discipline/cheat. Instead of beating yourself up for that ask yourself- what made you break the rule. Contemplate and take steps
5. Track progress: - Once you have taken action keep tracking progress atleast every week. Wherever you haven’t
6. Create routines: I love creating routines. It helps me be more organised. Make a routine and follow it

Sending much best wishes of the festive season. Stay committed and stay focused. Be disciplined and learn from the lord
