Magic before learning Magic ( part 1) - Magic with Morgan
Last few posts I have been talking about how I created magic in my life by using various tools like those of access consciousness. But today I would like to talk about how I created magic in my past even before I learnt Law of attraction or Access Consciousness.
Well this post is for everyone who believes we need to do magic.. Even before I learnt anything like access consciousness or law of attraction I created my life. For everyone who thinks we need to use access or Reiki or just because I am a Reiki master I can do magic. The fact is we just need to stop doing and start being.Magic stops when you ask how when what.If you are in a corporate job and wish to attract your bigger dream job this post is must for you
In the early 2000s I had just graduated in commerce from Podar college and had so many options with me. Mcom CA MBA LLB CS ..etc. meanwhile I decided to learn Tally in my vacation only because commerce students studied Tally after Bcom. How blindly we follow the herd!
Feeling complete out of place in the Tally class of complete strange people- I could only relate to 1 person- a girl named Shraddha. Later on came to know she was also from Dadar and an ex Podar student. Over the course of time we became very good friends. She too was looking out for a job and our daily discussions were all about who got placed where.
One day Shraddha mentioned a friend of her got placed in a firm named Morgan Stanley. I had heard of JP Morgan it being a big place in the ‘industry ‘ and immediately asked her is it J P Morgan Stanley ?( Don’t laugh -come on I was a kid)
:No no - those are 2 different firms - both crunch numbers. You know they have a big office and the bosses are foreigners!"
The whole concept sounded very glamorous as well as intellectual to me at the same time
Quite impressed by the whole Morgan Family discussion I came home and sat in front of my huge desktop computer and looked at ‘Morgan Stanley ‘ in my search engine- yahoo at that time as Google wasn’t as famous then.(Larry and Sergey probably we’re running behind the Google IPO then I guess )
I found the website of this American company and read all about their business. There I came across a term called ‘Investment Banking’ which pulled me. Quickly I asked my elder sister Anagha who was a freshly qualified Chartered Accountant. She explained me all that she knew about it. Later for the next few days I kept reading about this New York based bank and obsessing about its scope work and activity. I downloaded a lot of information from their website too
Meanwhile in 2005 I got admission in MBA college. I enjoyed my 2 years full time MBA with specialisation in finance(ofcourse what else). On my initial first days of MBA college my professor asked me which company would you like to work for post MBA to which I replied Morgan Stanley. The whole class went into a semi awkward silence and I kept wondering if I said anything wrong. 2 boys sitting on the next bench pulled my arm and said” Itne bade sapne mat dekh -aukat mein reh”(dont dream so big - stay in your limits) No one has reached big companies from this campus- rather find something smaller.”
But the badass in me couldn’t care about what they spoke. I continued to think I ll get into a big Investment Bank post my MBA. Infact I also secretly started writing my email as: ashwini.chube@morganstanley.com..so I was using the law of attraction without even knowing I was
Finally 2 years passed I finished my MBA and got placed in a good company but it was not Morgan Stanley..nor was it any of the Investment banks. But I never gave up on my dream.
The company I joined gave me great work experience for a beginner and ofcourse I am eternally grateful for that. Their training was one of the most superb ones. The only disadvantage was it was based on outskirts of Mumbai city and thus very very far from my home in South mid Mumbai . I took 2 hours to travel in the morning and 2 hours in evening.
I was still thinking of working in big investment banks . I remember sitting in my office and somedays closing my eyes and imagining that I am sitting in London Office and watching the red coloured busses passing below. On other days I imagined myself in an office right outside Times Square of New York. I knew that was completely crazy insane but it was only the way out of me getting into any negative thinking spiral.
A few more months passed and I had forwarded my resume to all possible investment banks on planet. There was nothing which was showing up. Your tribe plays an important role in manifestation- you always should have friends who support your dreams not the ones who show you so called real picture (the skeptics reality check) and keep you stuck in the situation .I had very few friends who supported my dreams back then and most would laugh at me for (being the rosy eyed pink glass through watching idiot )aimimg at unreal ambitions. But a few supportive friends really forwarded my resume at many organisations.
On 13th January 2008 I was going to my native place Goa for an annual trip. More than anything I was looking for a break from my routine. I was going with my family extended family and cousins. The trip mood was very good and I almost forgot about my next job hunt . At 10:30 when I was on the highway I got a call from unknown number. Hello this is the HR of Citigroup. May I speak to Ms Ashwini.”
I froze for a moment and said “yes” In those days getting a call from a big organisation was itself a miracle. They decided to schedule a meeting post me returning to Mumbai. I was on cloud 9.
As 2-3 more hours crossed and we took a break at Chiplun. My phone rang again and this time it was bigger “ Hi this is Alisha calling from the Human Resource team of JP Morgan - Am I speaking to Ashwini Choubey?”
" Calling from where - JP Morgan?" I exclaimed
" Yes Mam - we have an opening with the Fixed Income in Mumbai for US markets and have received your resume. Would you be interested?" she asked
" Ah Definitely- sure !!"
" Can we schedule an interview next week?"
" Definitely- thank you very much. And one more thing It is Chube not Choube “ I smiled as I corrected her
I was on completely in my high spirits as I had got 2 calls back to back. Just before reaching Goa I got a 3rd Call.
Hello gd evening mam - this is Ganga calling from HR consultant firm. Can I talk to Ashwini mam?
Yes speaking
Hello mam we have an opening with Barclays in their Pm department. We found your resume suitable- would you like to come for an interview?
I was speechless- Barclays - JP Citi- was I dreaming? That too in a span of few hours. My Dad n Uncle infact joked saying if we drive till Karnataka you ll get 4 more calls.
I returned from Goa and got back to the interviewers. Citi interview happened first and It was good. J P Morgan was good too however they wanted someone to work in the night shift which I refused. Barclays was lined up in a week.
Meanwhile back at work I received call from Lehman brothers (barely 7 months before it went bankrupt) but they wanted me to send resume urgently which I couldn’t as I was already at my workplace. And in those days we didn’t have iPhones to access emails anywhere. I was utterly disappointed as I missed that opportunity.
The weekend Following I attended a family get together at one of my cousins place and since I met many relatives after a long time I was not even sure who was who. One of my senior uncles who was highly educated abroad and had lived in the US was talking to my parents and me where my Dad was proudly telling him how Hard I worked for my MBA. And in reply to that my uncle said” Yes I know how hard these kids work for MBA. And Your kid looks very bright” He then told about his experience of working with MBA kids globally and during his stint abroad. The best thing which he said was” You see..One day Merrill Lynch will hire her” My joy knew no bounds as I took it as a sign from the universe. Till date I call him Merrill Lynch mama
I was meanwhile given my second round with Barclays which I cracked too.
On 29th January it was a usual afternoon.I received a call from another friend” Hey Ash listen. i just got a call from HR of some American bank. It is a research profile- However they are looking for an MBA.and since I am not an MBA I don’t qualify. I thought you might want to give it a try so have given your number.”
Super happy and Joyous I exclaimed. “Wow 😯 fcourse dear - that would be so. Great.thank you so much for recommending me. By the way which company is this?”
“Morgan Stanley “ she replied
I was in awe - how much magic I had created. I had the similar feeling of being asked out on a date by the guy of my dreams.
The HR called in an hour. I went for the interview the following day. There were 5 more grilling rounds and I cracked (rather slayed) all of them.
It was a month and I hadn't heard from Morgan Stanley - I was patiently waiting.. I continued keeping giving interviews in many other places. One remarkable one was in an Indian big firm ( I would rather not disclose their name).I had a technical round in the firm's office at Andheri which was decent but not excellent. After being done with the interview they said our team head wants to meet you and hence I waited. After waiting for 20 minutes I met a middle aged lady wearing an off white salwar suit who claimed to be head of the team .She looked at me through her silver eyeglasses and her piercing eyes made me more nervous. She had my resume in her hand and had a without a smile or a greeting asked me " So you are Ashwini Chube? "
"Yes Mam" I said
" I just heard about your interview with my subordinate. You are so terrible.Who called you for interview?" She almost raised her voice" I dont think we ll ever hire you...and not just me but I dont think anyone will hire you.You kids just want everything big....you dont deserve this job and every other employer will agree with me..Just getting an MBA doesnt give you a job ..your generation is full of people like you and you also want salary to add to it. First do some work then get a job.I wont even give you a job for free"
Although I did not understand what she was saying I felt like someone punched me on my nose.
I went to a CCD closeby and broke down while talking to my parents over the phone. They comforted me
Finally ...one fine day it happened. It took 2 months for me to get the formal offer letter from them because the headcount and permission from London office took a bit time. Life they say is a game of aptience and the one who waits patiently without losing to any pressure wins .Thus my patience was rewarded. On 12th March I heard from the team head of Morgan Stanley “ Ashwini- we are very sorry for the delay it took to give you the good news. You are hired!! We just heard from our London office this morning and they have given a go ahead for you. Our HR is on the way to print your offer letter and offer it to you. Meanwhile we congratulate you and look forward to see someone as intelligent as you on board”
“ Thank you” I said as I realised my heart was beating very fast and I was officially an employee of ‘the Morgan Stanley’ .The Universe had made it happen- I had made it happen.. it was actually happening. As I hung up the call with the head of the team and took a deep breath while on a journey back home from my current workplace I switched on the radio on my Nokia phone. To hear the song playing on Radio from the bollywood movie " Rang De Basanti"
“ Hui Subah - Main Jal gaya ...Suraj ko main Nigal gaya...Roooooba Rooo.. Roshni”
I got hired ..they paid me a little more than the pay package I asked for..it was celebration time!!
Well - I had an amazing work experience at the wonderful Morgan Stanley.l. The values I learnt in professionalism , focus , integrity and putting clients first form an integral part of my life. I learnt so much there and also made friends for life. These friends gave me such wonderful support and love I cherish their friendship forever even though we don’t meet everyday. I worked there for close to 3 years and later quit for better prospects to another bank.
As they say “ You can take the man out of Morgan but you cannot take Morgan out of the man” I still carry a part of Morgan Stanley in me which will live and cherish forever!
