Your Life Purpose ‘ Ikigai’ and story of Lord Hanuman

One of the most amazing TV series I recently rediscovered is the epic Ramayana of 1980s. May be the old school me never really liked the Netflix series and hence I could never binge watch other than a select few.

I guess my generation was too young to understand the learnings in Ramayan when it was telecast on TV in 1980s. However now the 30 something us are really enjoying watching it.

Todays post came to me while watching the episode that was telecasted today.  I have heard this story from my Dad .I remember co- facilitating the Brain Train program with my dear friend and colleague Ridhima Dua in January 2016 in Pune where we had discussed this story being told by our senior participant Vibhakar Vaidya uncle ( my friend Prajakta’s Dad)

In the epic Ramayana - when Seeta mata was kidnapped by the Demon king Ravana - Lord Ram sent the Vanar Sena ( Army of Monkeys) being led by Lord Hanuman himself along with the Vanar prince Angad and Learned Bear King Jambavant in search of Seeta mata. They reached the southern most tip of India where there was only ocean from that point and the army wasnt aware how to cross the large ocean . This was like a hitting a wall in the search.

At that point of time - Jambavant who was created by Brahma, to assist Rama in his struggle against Ravana spoke to Lord Hanuman. “ Hanuman you have epic super powers. And crossing this ocean is an easy task for you” Hanuman was not aware of this or rather had forgotten his superpowers.

At this point Jambavant made him realise his truth. The story goes as follows

Hanuman was the 4th Rudra or incarnation of Lord Shiva himself.
Lord Indra, had granted Hanuman a wish that his body would be as strong as Indra's Vajra, where as his Vajra can also not harm him. Along with Indra other gods had also granted him wishes such as God Agni granted Hanuman a wish that fire won't harm him, God Varuna granted a wish for Hanuman that water won't harm him, God Vayu granted a wish for Hanuman that he will be as fast as wind and the wind won't harm him. Lord Brahma had also granted Hanuman a wish that he can move at any place where he cannot be stopped at anywhere
As a child Hanuman was aware of his superpowers and would play pranks on hermits. Hanuman began using his supernatural powers on innocent bystanders as simple pranks, until one day he pranks a meditating sage. In fury, the sage cursed Hanuman to forget the vast majority of his powers.
Hanuman’s mother Mata Anjani - pleaded to the sage to forgive her son and take his curse off. By showing mercy to the child the sage forgave him on the condition that he can use his superpowers only when he fulfils his life purpose.

When Jambavant narrated this entire story- Hanuman was speechless. He realised that it was his life purpose to assist his Lord Ram who was himself an incarnation of Lord Narayan. Thus he was given his memory back and the veil of ambesia was lifted. He took a leap across the ocean and the rest we know is history

Why am I narrating this story?
We all are born with a life purpose. Our life purpose is an innate part of us. It cant be taken away. It makes us what we are. Much before we are born - our spirit guides and our spiritual team sits with us and chart out the life plan Before we incarnate, we along with our spirit guides, angels decide on what is our ‘life purpose’ or ‘learning purpose’ or ‘the blue print’. When we are in our spirit or soul form we have the knowledge of the real-life purpose. However when we take birth, we are born with an amnesia and hence we forget. We start living a mundane life unaware of the true purpose of us. We get into jobs inorder to fit in into the world and live a mediocre life focussed on fearful and negative thinking. Difficulties, Politics and injustice become a part of our day to day work and we believe that is the only way to live it.
However when we find our life purpose it is almost that we get our superpowers back. Life becomes easy. There are no problems. Things just unfold miraculously. The whole Universe supports you and every molecule dances to your tune. Even struggles become short lived and everything works out for you

What is this life purpose?
Your life purpose is what you have taken birth for.
In todays 21st Century - Life purpose it has 4 characteristics. Japanese often call it as Ikigai
  1. You love doing it
  2. You are an expert at it
  3. It pays you money
  4. It allows you to serve the society

Have you found your Life purpose?
If you have found your life purpose- this is the time to go deeper into it. Explore the core of it.

If you have not yet found your life purpose - keep looking for it and listen to your heart. You don’t need to chase it. Nor you need to judge yourself and be hard on yourself for haven’t yet found it. Dont do that. All you can do is find all things that give you joy and open your heart. And your life purpose will be drawn to you
Till them keep looking and stay happy
